1. Incomplete or Inconsistent Documentation

This is the #1 reason for visa rejection. Missing documents, inconsistent information across forms, or documents that don't match your application details can lead to instant refusal. Every document must be consistent — your name, date of birth, and other details must match exactly across all paperwork.

2. Insufficient Financial Proof

Immigration officers need to see that you can afford tuition AND living expenses. Common mistakes include: showing funds that were recently deposited (looks like borrowed money), not providing evidence of the source of funds, and miscalculating the required amount. For Canada, you need a GIC of CAD 20,635 plus proof of first-year tuition.

3. Weak Statement of Purpose

Your SOP should clearly explain why you chose this specific course, university, and country. Generic statements like "I want to study abroad for better opportunities" won't suffice. You need to demonstrate a logical connection between your past education, chosen program, and future career plans in Sri Lanka.

4. Not Demonstrating Ties to Home Country

Visa officers assess whether you're a genuine student or a potential immigrant (except for countries with explicit PR pathways). Show strong ties to Sri Lanka — family connections, property ownership, future career plans that involve returning, or a family business you'll join.

5. Applying to the Wrong Program Level

Applying for a program that doesn't align with your academic history raises red flags. For example, if you have a Master's degree and apply for a Bachelor's program, or if your chosen field is completely unrelated to your previous studies without a compelling explanation.

6. Missing Deadlines

Visa processing takes 2-8 weeks depending on the country. Many students underestimate this timeline and apply too late, missing their university intake date. Always apply at least 3-4 months before your intended travel date.

7. Poor Interview Preparation

Some countries require visa interviews. Being nervous, giving inconsistent answers, or appearing unsure about your study plans can lead to rejection. Practice common interview questions, know your application details thoroughly, and present yourself confidently.
